The traditional Fish Lantern Dance was once in danger of being lost, but was eventually passed down after villagers excavaed, arranged and rehearsed it.
In 2008, Shatoujiao Fish Lantern Dance was listed in the National Intangible Cultural Heritage list.

Each"fish" has a body that can move freely. Instead of simply holding the lantern, the actor have to holds the lantern in a half squatting position, making the fish sway its head and tail in line with the rhythm.
